ESR6 – Rodica Botnarevscaia – EMC EUrope 2024 in Bruges
The EMC Europe 2024 Conference was held in the wonderful historic city of Bruges Belgium.
All conference activities were held in a large conference centre with spacious rooms for exhibitions, sessions, meetings and presentations.
The conference was attended by 717 representatives of research institutes, enterprises, PhDs and professors. 33 different manufacturers presented their products.
Ivan Struzhko organized and conducted a “Special Session on EMC for Power Electronic Systems in Electrified Transportation Systems”. During the session, I gave two presentations: “Development of an In-Situ Detection Mechanism for Common-Mode Choke Saturation” and “Comparison of Electromagnetic Parameters of Nanocrystalline Cores”. These presentations were the result of teamwork and co-authorship with ESR02 Cathrine Feloups, ESR04 Ivan Struzhko, Dr. Tetiana Serdiuk, Dr. Tom Hartman, Dr. Niek Moonen, and Professor Frank Leferink.
The main idea of the first work is to propose a method for detecting the saturation of the nanocrystalline core's magnetic material. During the experiment, the core was saturated with DC current, and the effect of this process on the changes in the high-frequency detection signal was monitored. It was found that at the moment of saturation, the amplitude of the detection signal begins to decrease sharply. This drop is most clearly observed at the frequencies where the permeability of the magnetic core starts to decline.
In the second presentation, a method for comparing the parameters of nanocrystalline cores was proposed, including:
- Cross-section area
- Centre line length
- Inductance of one coil
- Magnetic permeability
- Saturation current
- Magnetic flux densities
The accuracy of this method was verified by comparing the obtained results with the data provided by the manufacturer in the datasheet. The method allows for determining the specified parameters for specific production needs, such as a frequency range different from that in the datasheet, verifying the parameters of uncertified cores, or when designing new devices.
At the end of our session, Senior Application Development Specialist at 3M, Dr. Andrea Stricker, approached us. She was very interested in our research and shared information about the company’s production areas that closely relate to our work. She introduced us to some of their products, such as EMI Shielding Absorber, EMI Absorber, External PIM Absorber, and others. 3M has offices and manufacturing facilities all over the world, including the USA, Germany, Poland, China, Brazil, and many other countries.
We gained a lot of new, interesting, and useful information by attending the presentations and tutorials of other conference participants. Here are some examples of the most memorable ones:
- Tutorial on how can readily availably state of the art full-wave EM simulation tools empower your Design for EMC process.
- Uniform magnetic field coils construction optimization. (Speaker – Klemen Stibernik)
- A Study on Propagation Path Analysis Method for Radiated Emission from EV High Voltage Systems. (Speaker– Hee Hoon Yi)
- Analysis of Cable Factors on Shielding Effectiveness Measurements with GTEM Cell (Speaker– Furkan Sahin)
- Electric Vehicle Testing and Verification of Electromagnetic Noise Suppression by Signal Processing in AM Radio. (Speaker – Retsu Sugawara)
- Monte Carlo Uncertainty Tensorial-Analysis-of-Networks of EMI Filter with Lumped Component Parasitic Effect Variability. (Speaker – Blaise Ravelo)
And many others.
During the coffee breaks, there was an opportunity to talk with other conference participants, share impressions and experiences, and exchange contacts. The conference organizers provided us with a variety of drinks and delicious food, which made attending the conference very enjoyable.
The evening of the fourth day provided a great opportunity to network in an informal setting at EMC Europe 2024 symposium dinner held in La Brugeoise.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the organizers for selecting the enchanting city of Bruges as the venue for this conference. The charm of this picturesque city, often referred to as a living historical open-air museum, has created a truly unforgettable experience. Each evening spent wandering through its cobbled streets, surrounded by stunning medieval architecture and serene canals, has left a lasting impression. The atmosphere here has not only inspired engaging discussions but also fostered connections that I will cherish for years to come. Thank you for making this gathering so memorable!
